🎨Temperance of Leonora Carrington
Create a Tarot style Art card inspired by April's Aries Lady of Light
Artist & Alchemist

Welcome to Running with Rainbows, my name is Maja Larson and I am from Oakbank Manitoba Canada! I am a self taught Multi media Artist who enjoys making & teaching art online and in person.
All throughout 2024 we are exploring Women Artists and creating fun creative pieces inspired by each Artist.
April is the month of Airies, of the undeniable rise of the creative spark. April is the month of renewal.
Art is an Alchemy between the Mind Body And Spirit of a person.
People like to make a big deal about Alchemy but it's actually very common place. Alchemy is the human imitation of process of change, Nature is engaged in it all the time.
Our bodies and minds are always changing. Every 7* years we are basically a new US as the cells in our body are regenerated. The 7 years is not quite accurate according to science, but suffice it to say, our bodies are in a constant process of renewal and repair.
The Tarot and its mysterious origins- have inspired many Artists. In the 1950s when Carrington and Dali and other Surrealist Artists were creating Tarot decks based on the Esoteric movements that were flourishing, there wasn't a lot of public talk on the matter.
Now in 2024, some 70+ years later Tarot Decks& Oracle Decks are almost common place.
The Taboos surrounding the Mystical Arts lifted in our modern era. Opening the gates of wisdom at the start of the age of information or as it is also known, the Age of Aquarius.

Leonora Carrington was one of the most celebrated female Surrealist. Born in Great Britain in 1917 on April 06th. She grew up in an affluent environment that served to fuel a rebellion in her. Against the social expectations for herself and her art.
Her deep appreciation of her Celtic roots fused with her love of the new home she found in Mexico after fleeing Europe, gave birth to her unique Surrealist language. Which she explored with like hearted Artists.
“ I warn you, I refuse to be an object.” - Leonora Carrington
Art is definitely a means to healing, to the Alchemic process of healing. Leonora leaned into the secret life of art to survive the traumatic events that preceeded her arrival in Mexico.
Art therapy and the use of art making as means of processing trauma is an accepted form of treatment today. I see much of the Art produced by Surrealists in this light. The Art is a reflection of the inner conversation our minds and souls are engaged in.
From Pg 131 of The Tarot of Leonora Carrington 2nd edition:
“ Ever the mischievous artist stirring cauldrons, Carrington highlights the artist's role as a magical creator. It is interesting to note that according to Book T, this arcana is named “ART” meaning “human effort to imitate, supplement, alter, or counteract the work of nature.” that for me makes TEMPERANCE the Artists Card.
Today's class while inspired by Tarot is not in any way making a Tarot card. I chose Leonora's TEMPERANCE card because of her description of it calls yo mind, An Artist. The Artists Card.
Author’s notes:
I have personally enjoyed Oracle/Tarot / Rune decks. I collect decks for their Art and the opportunity for inner contemplation not so much for their Fortune Telling. In order to understand them- I have created my own decks.
My favorite cards to create are, TEMPERANCE + The STAR + STRENGTH .They always draw me in.
For April's Aries Class we are going to create our own TEMPERANCE art card.
